The Top 10 Mistakes Lash Techs Make and How to Avoid Them
From newbies to seasoned professionals, every lash technician is bound to make mistakes. And that’s okay! Mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth, setting us up for future success. Here are the ten most common mistakes we make as lash techs and how to avoid them:
1. Improperly Applying Gel Pads and Tapes
One of the first steps in the lash extension process is securing the lower lashes with gel pads or tape. Incorrect placement can cause discomfort for the client and interfere with the application process. Ensure the pads are placed comfortably under the eyes, without touching the waterline, to keep the lower lashes out of the way and provide a clear workspace for application.
2. Using the Wrong Adhesive
Adhesive plays a crucial role in the lash application process. Using an adhesive that is too slow or too fast for your skill level can lead to poor retention and client dissatisfaction. Familiarize yourself with different adhesives and choose one that matches your working speed and the humidity and temperature levels of your workspace.
3. Incorrect Amount of Adhesive
Using too much adhesive can create clumpy, unattractive lashes and may cause irritation. On the other hand, using too little can lead to poor retention. Aim for a small, consistent bead of adhesive on the base of the extension for optimal .
4. Inadequate Isolation and Rushing
Isolation is key to applying individual lash extensions. Not isolating properly or rushing through a set can result in lashes sticking together or poor placement, leading to discomfort and potential damage to the natural lashes. Take your time to ensure each natural lash is isolated before applying the extension.
5. Ignoring Environmental Factors
Humidity and temperature greatly affect adhesive performance. Working in an environment that is too humid or too dry can compromise the adhesive’s curing time and retention. Monitor your workspace conditions and adjust your adhesive and application techniques accordingly.
6. Over-Brushing the Lashes
While brushing is important to keep the lashes looking neat and to ensure proper separation, over-brushing can damage the extensions and natural lashes. Brush gently and only as needed, typically once or twice during the application process and once the set is complete.
7. Inadequate Lash Preparation
Properly preparing the natural lashes before applying extensions is crucial for retention. Clean the lashes thoroughly to remove any oils or makeup residues, and use a primer if needed. This step ensures the adhesive bonds correctly and the extensions stay in place longer.
8. Incorrect Extension Placement
Placement of the extension on the natural lash is vital for a natural look and optimal retention. Extensions should be placed 1-2 mm away from the eyelid, aligned with the natural lash growth. Avoid placing extensions too close to the eyelid, which can cause irritation, or too far, which affects retention.
9. Lack of Aftercare Instructions
Clients need to know how to care for their lash extensions to maintain them between appointments. Provide clear aftercare instructions and recommend suitable products. Emphasise the importance of keeping lashes clean, avoiding oil-based products, and brushing them regularly.
10. Poor Stock Management
Running out of essential supplies can disrupt your workflow and affect your service quality. Regularly check your stock levels and reorder supplies before they run out. Keep an organised inventory system to ensure you always have what you need on hand.
Avoiding these common mistakes can significantly enhance your skills and the quality of your lash services. By paying attention to detail, using the right products, and providing excellent client care, you can build a thriving lash business.
